Conventional gas boilers in Austrian households work with renewable gas just as well as with natural gas, as the physical composition is exactly the same. This is good news: because there is sufficient potential for green gas in Austria. According to the professional association, the potential of bio-methane is even far above the current room heating requirements. In addition, green hydrogen can be produced from excess electricity from volatile renewable production, such as wind power. This can be fed into the existing gas pipeline network. However, this requires predictable framework conditions and market-based support models. Households could thus be spared the costly switch to another heating system for decarbonisation.
