Focus on gas to achieve climate targets

Representatives of the energy and chemical industries have recently called on the German government to give greater consideration to natural gas in order to achieve climate targets and ensure the security of energy supply and Germany's competitiveness. The gas industry was "part of the solution now and in the future" - a political strategy was needed to continue to rely on gas and its infrastructure. For the representatives, this includes "reliable energy and climate policy framework conditions", but also protection against so-called carbon leakage in order to avoid carbon emissions and jobs being shifted to countries with lower environmental standards. At the same time, hydrogen offers an opportunity to become greenhouse gas neutral in the long term. For Austria, too, gas is indispensable in the future energy mix, as large quantities of energy can be provided efficiently and reliably in the existing infrastructure. Moreover, the switch to renewable energies can be carried out in a comparatively cost-saving manner.
