Shaping the future of hydrogen - GCA presents PCI projects in Brussels!

On 14 April 2025, Gas Connect Austria presented its two key hydrogen infrastructure projects as part of the PCI process to representatives of the European Commission at the Regional Group Meeting for Hydrogen in Brussels. The projects "H2 Backbone WAG + Penta-West" and "H2 Backbone Murfeld" were re-submitted in December for inclusion in the PCI list (Projects of Common Interest).

Stefan Königshofer, Head of Sales Transmission and Distribution, presented the projects in Brussels and emphasised their importance for an efficient European hydrogen network.

H2 Backbone WAG + Penta-West

With the extension of the West-Austria-Gas pipeline (WAG) and the Penta-West pipeline, this connection will become the future hub for hydrogen transport in Central and Eastern Europe. As part of the SoutH2 Corridor, it will enable the import and transit of hydrogen from North Africa via Italy to Austria and on to Germany. At the same time, it is the strategic link to Northern and Eastern Europe, e.g. as part of the 'H2EU+Store' initiative, which provides for the import and storage of hydrogen from Ukraine

H2 Backbone Murfeld

This project provides hydrogen transport capacity between Slovenia and Austria. Possible sources: the LNG terminal in Krk (Croatia) and imports from North Africa via Italy.
