Chronology

10. 4. 2018

Reconstruction at the natural gas station Baumgarten is progressing rapidly. Gas Connect Austria has re-commissioned another part of the equipment earlier than planned. As a result, capacity from the transmission system to the distribution area is again fully available and to the same extent as before the incident. This commissioning of a natural gas pipeline, which was originally intended for the beginning of May, was completed three weeks earlier and followed the first partial commissioning on 13 March. The primary goal of restoring transport capacity as quickly as possible has thus been achieved prematurely.

13. 3. 2018

On 13 March, Gas Connect Austria will recommission the first section of the equipment destroyed in the accident at the Baumgarten gas hub on 12 December 2017.
Following a general assessment of the damage and talks with experts and suppliers, a schedule was drawn up for the repair work and recommissioning.

Although the investigation into the accident is still ongoing, reconstruction is proceeding on schedule. Market participants received details of the planned step-by-step recommissioning at the start of February.

Thanks to this initial recommissioning, capacity will be available for injections from the transmission network to the distribution area, albeit only to a limited extent. The work which has now been completed was carried out on a compressor station, a gas pipeline and a metering station. As market participants have already been informed, the next step in the recommissioning process will be concluded in early May, resulting in a further increase in capacity. Supplies to Austrian gas consumers were never in jeopardy, and this remains the case today.

2. 2. 2018

Following the highly regrettable accident at the Baumgarten gas compressor station on 12 December last year, the clear-up and restoration operation at the site is now in full swing. As reported, the station entered a safe operating state for a short period immediately after the accident. The site of the accident was then secured and isolated from the gas grid. On the same day, the Baumgarten gas hub resumed limited operations.

Supplies to Austrian gas consumers were never in jeopardy, and this remains the case today.

Today, the market participants were informed that further sections of the Baumgarten facility will return to operation on 13 March 2018 and 1 May 2018. In the first phase, work will be carried out on a compressor station, a gas pipeline and a metering station, while work in phase two will focus on another pipeline. Following a general assessment of the damage and talks with experts and suppliers, a schedule was prepared for the repair and recommissioning of the equipment affected (technical manufacture and accompanying approval procedure). According to the schedule, these parts of the facility will be recommissioned on 13 March 2018 and 1 May 2018.

The initial suspicions that the accident may have originated with a newly installed filter separator have been increasingly confirmed by the evidence in the course of the day. The investigating authorities believe that the incident was caused by the seal on the cap of the filter separator. The cap had come loose and was propelled with great force against another part, causing damage to this part as well. The gas which subsequently escaped was then ignited, leading to a gas fire at two points of origin. An emergency plan was immediately initiated and led to a shutdown of the entire gas station. The damaged parts of the plant were isolated from the rest of the station, thereby facilitating a resumption in international gas transport the same night.

08 Uhr 30

To begin with, the management team at Gas Connect Austria would like to thank all emergency services and authorities for the excellent cooperation, especially the extraordinary efforts of all emergency organizations.

Since last night, we are again in a position to supply gas from the Baumgarten compressor station, like before the incident. This means that all transit systems are functional and operational in all directions. The domestic supply is also secure.

The State Office of Criminal Investigations, experts in the field, and employees of GCA are presently investigating the cause of the accident.

20 Uhr

Following extensive investigations by the fire brigade and the regional police, flows on the Trans Austria Gas pipeline towards Italy, the West Austria Gas pipeline to Germany and the Hungaria-Austria Gas pipeline will be restored over the next few hours.

The exact cause of the accident is unclear; the current assumption is that it was caused by a technical fault. The respective authorities and experts from Gas Connect Austria are intensively investigating the potential causes of the incident. Austria’s natural gas supply was at no time at risk. With the restart of operation on the international pipeline systems, it will be possible to resume transit through Austria, thereby restoring security of supply for the affected countries.
